Gaibandha District: A to Z information

Gaibandha is a district in northern part of Bangladesh. It is a part of the Rangpur which has been division recently. The Gaibandha subdivision was established in 1875. Gaibandha was formerly known as Bhabaniganj. Later the name was changed from Bhabaniganj to Gaibandha.

It has many popular places to visit which you won’t find in other districts. According to the Mahabharata, King Birat had 605,000 cows that were often looted by robbers. To protect his livestock from the hands of the robbers, the king set up a huge herd. The cattle were tied up along the river in this area. “Guy” means “cow” and “tied” means “tied up”. This is why the region was called Gaibandha.
