Moulvibazar city is named after Moulvibazar city, southeast district of Sylhet Division of northeastern Bangladesh. It is bounded on the south and east by the states of Tripura and Assam; And Habiganj on the west and Sylhet Bangladesh District on the north.

The district is named after Moulvibazar’s headquarters city, Moulvibazar. The word Maulvi and Bazar comes from two words, meaning ‘Maulvi Bazar’. ‘Maulvi’ is an Islamic honorific title and the word ‘bazaar’ is a Bangla word for market or town.
