Barisal district is also known as Barisal, which is a major city that lies on the bank of Kirtankhola River in south-central Bangladesh. Barisal district and Barisal Division’s largest city and the administrative headquarter is in Barisal. “Chandradip” is the ancient name of the region and the capital of the kingdom was Bakla founded by Danuj Madhab or Danuj Mardhan Dev. This is not only an oldest river post but an oldest municipality of Bangladesh as well. In the year 1876, the Barisal municipality was established1876 during the British Raj and upgraded to City Corporation on 25 July 2002.
Besides, the city is consisted with 30 wards and 50 mahallas with a population of 328,278 according to the 2011 national census. On the other hand, the area of the city is 58 km². It was established in 1797 as Bakerganj district, but later it was renamed as Barisal district. And finally, Barisal was declared a division on 1 January, 1993.

The area of Barisal district is 2790.51 sq km and it’s bounded by Madaripur, Shariatpur, Chandpur, and Lakshmipur districts on the north. On the south are Patuakhali, Barguna and Jhalokati districts. Moreover, Bhola and Lakshmipur districts on the east and Jhalokati, Pirojpur and Gopalganj districts on the west of the district. There are many rivers in Barisal district including the Kirtankhola, Arial Khan, Khoyrabad, Kalijira and Sandha. It’s located in the south- central part of Bangladesh. The district’s Geo position of the district is between 22˚42’ North latitudes and between 90˚22’ east longitude. It’s known as the “Sassya Vander” (store of corns) of Bangladesh.
